U.S. Geological Survey
Geographer
San Antonio, TX
Me in a Sentence: Geographer and researcher passionate about developing new tools, technology, and apps using remote sensing to solve real-world problems.

A bit more about me:
I joined the Illinois WSC Data Section in 2012 while pursuing my Ph.D. in Geography and Civil Engineering. At that time, I was an expert in Hydroacoustics and worked with the Office of Surface Water on developing software like the Velocity Mapping Toolbox, technical review of QRev, and other related work. Over the years, I have taught most of the ADCP-related classes in USGS and in about 2014 ventured into using Uncrewed Aerial Systems and camera-based photogrammetry methods like Structure from Motion for the first time. I also started working with non-contact imagery-related methods that use computer vision techniques including image velocimetry and camera pose-related work. In 2017 relocated to Texas, where I continued working on UAS and non-contact methods, including Doppler radar for streamflow methods. In 2022, I moved into the WMA Observing Systems Division - Hydrologic Remote Sensing Branch, where I develop national programs to leverage imagery, video, and other hydrometric measurements to make water resource collection and quantification safer, faster, and more efficient.

I view my purpose in USGS as advocating for new technologies that will make our jobs easier while also increasing our capabilities to complete the mission. I've always had the perspective that these research topics are most valuable when they can be brought to make operational changes to the way we do things. I am open to feedback and criticism from the Water Community to keep me on track and useful to your needs, so don't be afraid to let me know what you think.

In my personal life, I spend as much time as I can gravel and mountain biking, or otherwise staying outside (even in the Texas heat). I have a beautiful family, a wife that somehow still puts up with me, and the two best kiddos I could ever possibly imagine.
